Wikis

A wiki is a collaborative website which is open and can be changed by any user who is granted the right to edit a given page or section.

An example of a popular consumer wiki is Wikipedia.

There are two types of wikis:

Publishing wikis like MediaWiki, are useful for publishing online documents and photos.

Most wikis are publishing wikis, but a few have more capabilities...

Structured wikis like TWiki, can do everything a publishing wiki does, plus allow you to build custom business applications. They can evolve to cover not only publishing requirements but also knowledge management and workflow processing needs across an enterprise.

It pays to start with a structured wiki because the site can then evolve to include more robust capabilities when required in the future.

An example of a structured wiki is this website you are now using which not only publishes content but which also has forms, data processing and transactions. This entire website, all of the forms, databases and processing were built using TWiki.
