TWIKI.NET releases WikiCrawler software
Profile your wiki landscape: Use WikiCrawler to discover unmanaged information silos.
SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 5, 2008 TWIKI.NET, the leading provider of open source enterprise collaboration solutions, announced the release of its WikiCrawler software.
In many instances, wikis have been introduced to organizations without the support of IT. There may be many different wiki flavors deployed within a company depending upon personal familiarity or departmental preferences. Despite the fact that many of these wiki islands contain mission critical corporate data, the support of wikis has largely bypassed IT management and process. “TWIKI.NET’s WikiCrawler is the first tool specifically designed to assist the IT manager in understanding the extent of wiki use throughout their organization” said Will Thomas, COO of TWIKI.NET.
WikiCrawler is free to users who register at TWIKI.NET. WikiCrawler scans designated networks and reports the type and address of each wiki server discovered. IT managers can then use this information to help optimize the company’s collaboration infrastructure and ensure the data is properly backed up. The software allows the user to define additional wiki types as needed.
With Certified TWiki and better visibility created by WikiCrawler, there is no reason to have a marketing department using a different wiki than the one used by engineering. The existence of these information islands is completely counter to best practices that should be used by knowledge-based organizations to compete globally.
Yahoo!’s internal use of TWiki is company wide, with over 400,000 pages of information, 5 million page views and 1 million page edits per month in an organization of over 14,000 employees. "TWiki is a critical part of our intranet," said. Dirk Pranke, Yahoo!'s Chief Architect for IT. "It provides great scalability and functionality while being very easy to use and administer."
