TWIKI.NET Announces New Leadership
Thomas Barton to Become Chairman of the Board and Interim CEO
SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 20, 2008 — TWIKI.NET, a leading provider of enterprise collaboration solutions, announced that Thomas Barton has joined the company as Chairman of the Board and Interim CEO. Barton replaces co-Founder Rod Beckstrom, who has left the company to become the first Director of the U.S. Government’s newly created National Cyber Security Center, which will operate within the Department of Homeland Security.
"I am excited to continue Rod's work of building a large, market leading company in enterprise collaboration," said Barton. "His appointment as Director of the National Cyber Security Center is an endorsement of his pioneering work in collaborative, decentralized communications in both his research and at TWIKI.NET."
More and more enterprises are recognizing the need to implement collaboration platforms that enable improved teamwork and faster decision making. Through the power of open source, the TWiki platform has become the leading enterprise collaboration platform in use today, with over half of the Fortune 500 using it in some part of their organization. Currently there are over 60,000 active TWiki deployments representing millions of users in over 120 countries.
Barton joins TWIKI.NET with substantial experience in open source software. He was Interim CEO of Cygnus Solutions, a leader in open source development tools, which was acquired by Red Hat Software in 1999. At Red Hat, he continued as Senior Vice President of Client Services. More recently, he was CEO at Rackable Systems. He led the company from December of 2002 to April of 2007, growing annual sales from $25 million to $360 million during that time frame. He took the company public in June of 2005.
"We are thrilled to get Tom Barton on board," said Thoeny. "His proven ability to turn innovation into market leadership in open source and open standard markets make him the ideal replacement for Rod Beckstrom, for whom we wish the best of luck in Washington DC."
Beckstrom formed TWIKI.NET along with Peter Thoeny, who continues as the company's Chief Technology Officer. Beckstrom is the bestselling author of The Starfish and The Spider, an influential book about the power of decentralized organizations. Peter Thoeny is the founder of the open source project TWiki.org and the co-founder of TWIKI.NET. He is a recognized expert in wikis and is the co-author of Wikis for Dummies.
